How Microfibre works

When it comes to cleaning and wiping surfaces, microfibre cloth is the most popular choice of material. for the last few years. What makes it popular amongst facility managers and cleaners?

There are different kinds of microfibre. A microfibre that is used for cleaning is usually a synthetic blend between polyester and polyamide that is combined together then split in production into this ultra-thin fibres to create that extra spaces in between. These extra spaces in between (as illustrated above) help in effectively picking up and trapping dirt and grime and moisture in between these spaces. The spaces in between hold onto the dirt and moisture until they are released through the laundering or rinsing process. To know if it is a split type of microfibre, run your hands through a high-quality microfibre cloth, the fibres will cling to your skin.

Besides the spaces in between, the fibre of a microfibre is positively charged. Dirt and dust are negatively charged so the microfibre attracts the dirt like a magnet!

Microfibre vs Cotton: What is the difference?

Cotton is natural fibre while microfibre is made up of a synthetic blend of polyester and polyamide. Cotton is breathable and is cheaper to purchase. However, it pushes the dirt around instead of picking it up, leaving residue behind on the surface. It also leaves lint behind.

Microfibre is great at picking up dirt and moisture and traps it between its fibres that it does not leave any residue behind. It is highly absorbent that it can absorb seven times its weight in water. Although a high-quality microfibre can be expensive, it is quite durable and can last hundreds of washes if cared for properly. It does need special laundering as compared to cotton.

When it comes to size, a microfibre is so small, it is 100 times smaller when you compare it to a strand of human hair. It is a third smaller than a cotton fibre.

What are the benefits of using microfibre cloth?

  1. It is highly absorbent, leaving no residue behind. It makes cleaning faster, easier and more effective.
  2. Microfibre is great at picking up dirt and germs leaving surfaces clean. There is less chance of germs spreading!
  3. If using a microfibre cloth, you require little or no chemicals. You have less chance of being with hazardous chemicals.
  4. Microfibre cloths actually come out very cost-effective and reliable in the long run if you take care and launder it properly. It will last hundreds of washes.

A microfibre cloth can last a long time if it has been taken care of. With microfibre, you will be able to clean more efficiently and in a lot less time thus, decreasing your labour costs and material costs. It gives you confidence that the room and surface are clean.
